ATLANTA – State Representative Zulma Lopez (D-Atlanta) today announced that she will not seek re-election to the Georgia House of Representatives. Rep. Lopez issued the following statement regarding her decision:
“After thoughtful consideration, I have made the difficult decision not to seek re-election to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2022. Serving Georgians and representing my House District 86 under the Gold Dome has truly been an honor and privilege.
“Since I first took office, I have deeply appreciated the chance to represent you. I am also grateful for the chance to serve on several crucial House committees, including the House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee, where I was proud to establish the credibility and respect needed to be heard, thus allowing me to make bills better and less restrictive. During my service, I was also incredibly honored to cast my vote to repeal Georgia’s citizen’s arrest law, which was the highlight of my first legislative session.
“During my final legislative session, I am ready to meet the demands necessary to uphold our democratic values. As always, I will remain accessible to all of you. And, when my term ends before the 2023 legislative session, I will also be available to serve as a resource to our next representative. There are one million Latinos in Georgia which make up 10 percent of the state’s population, and I will continue to devote my time and energy to uplift the immigrant voices in our state. I look forward to watching diverse perspectives lead Georgia forward, and I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to represent and serve House District 86 at the Georgia State Capitol.”
Rep. Lopez will continue to serve the remainder of her current term in office, which will expire when the Georgia General Assembly convenes for the 2023 legislative session.
Representative Zulma Lopez represents the citizens of District 86, which includes portions of DeKalb County. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2020 and currently serves on the Economic Development & Tourism, Judiciary Non-Civil and Science and Technology committees.
