Democratic Members of the Fulton County Delegation Announce Support for Fulton County Commission Map Passed by Senate

ATLANTA – Democratic members of the Fulton County Legislative Delegation, chaired by State Representative David Dreyer (D-Atlanta), today announced their support of Senate Bill 437, legislation approved unanimously by the State Senate to update the district map for the Fulton County Board of Commissioners. Additionally, leadership of the Fulton County Delegation, including State Reps. Dreyer, Derrick Jackson (D-Tyrone), Roger Bruce (D-Atlanta) and Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta), strongly refuted claims that Democratic members of the delegation support non-partisan county elections in Fulton County.

“There was never any intention from my office, or the office of any Democrat from the Fulton delegation, to move towards non-partisan county elections,” said Rep. Dreyer. “Because of time constraints due to additional public input and work towards a consensus, the Georgia General Assembly Office of Legislative Counsel presented a placeholder bill that was substituted less than 24-hours later with a commission map.”

Senate Bill 437 was introduced using the typical process for local redistricting legislation, which often includes the adjustment of existing legislation. These legislators seek to make constituents aware that the eventual passage of the legislation would have no effect on how Fulton County Commissioners are elected, beyond the constitutionally required redistricting process.

“I am proud of the work our delegation has done to make sure all voices are heard throughout the redistricting process,” said Rep. Jackson, who serves as the vice chair of the delegation. “Throughout this process, we have worked with as many elected leaders as possible to make sure that Fulton County is fairly represented.”

The map originally proposed by the Fulton County Legislative Delegation received approval from the Fulton County Commission when it was voted on earlier this year.

SB 437 has been sent to the Georgia House of Representatives for consideration.
