ATLANTA – State Representative Matt Dubnik (R-Gainesville), chairman of the House Education Committee, was recently appointed to serve on a new special subcommittee of the House Higher Education Committee to address workforce development. Appointed by House Higher Education Chairman Chuck Martin (R-Alpharetta), Rep. Dubnik will help examine current challenges the state is facing with respect to recruiting and retaining talent to Georgia’s workforce.
“Georgia is the envy of the nation when it comes to record-breaking job creation, and one of my top priorities is preparing our workforce with the appropriate skills and training to fill these roles,” said Rep. Dubnik. “My job as the chairman of our House Education Committee is to foster learning environments that set our children up for success when they become adults. Not only will the subcommittee’s work benefit college graduates, but I am hoping to also support effective career pathways for students who want to enter the workforce right out of high school.”
Rep. Dubnik, along with the other subcommittee members, will specifically examine innovative solutions to meet the most urgent workforce needs across several industry sectors. This special subcommittee will partner with Georgia’s higher learning institutions and the business community to develop more targeted curricula and increase career-focused enrollment, among other issues.
This bipartisan subcommittee will also consider multiple factors influencing the current labor shortage in Georgia and around the world. Nationally, there are 3.9 million fewer workers in the workforce today compared to 2019. Since the pandemic began, America has created more than 6.4 million new jobs. There has also been a 34 percent increase in American gig workers since 2019.
Representative Matt Dubnik represents the citizens of District 29, which includes portions of Hall County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2016 and currently serves as Chairman of the Education Committee, as well as Secretary of the Appropriations Committee. He is a member of the Game, Fish & Parks, Higher Education, Juvenile Justice, Small Business Development and Interstate Cooperation committees. He also serves as an Ex-Officio member of the Ways & Means Committee.
