ATLANTA – State Representative Mandisha A. Thomas (D-South Fulton) will host a pilot “Agri-Literacy Camp” for children on Friday, July 14, 2023, and Saturday, July 15, 2023, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Your Faith Farms in Fairburn. Advanced registration is required; families may register their children here.
The program is designed to encourage literacy and give children firsthand experience with livestock and crops. This pilot program will feature activities and readings from the National Center for Agricultural Literacy. Your Faith Farms’ principal farmer, Patrick Muhammed, will serve as the lead instructor for the camp. A special lesson will be taught by Madison Dysart with the Georgia Department of Agriculture and Wayne Swanson of the Swanson Family Farm.
To be eligible, children must be in second or third grade. Children must also be available to participate in both days of the program. They will be provided with a morning and afternoon snack and a nutritious lunch. Parents are encouraged to stay, or parents may leave with the understanding of a strict pickup time of 4 p.m. each day. Families will be notified of acceptance to the program via phone by July 10.
The pilot program is sponsored by Tomorrow’s Farmers Productions, the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus and the South Fulton Farm Bureau.
The “Agri-Literacy Camp” is a part of “A.C.E. on the Case: Food Access, Food Consumption and Food Education,” which is a statewide initiative created by Rep. Thomas.
