Rep. Carl Gilliard to Serve as Keynote Speaker at St. James AME Church in Savannah

ATLANTA – State Representative Carl Gilliard (D-Savannah) today announced that he will serve as the keynote speaker at St. James AME Church in Savannah on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at 10 a.m. for the church’s Annual Stewardship Celebration. Rep. Gilliard’s keynote address is titled, “The Power of One.”

“I am honored to be welcomed to St. James AME Church as their keynote speaker this coming Sunday, and I thank Pastor Scott for the warm invitation,” said Rep. Gilliard. “St. James AME Church is a pillar in our community with a rich history of providing community-focused services to its congregants and those in need. I appreciate their partnership and look forward to addressing the congregation.”

In 1865, Bishop Henry McNeal Turner founded St. James AME Church, a “Historical Place to Worship.” St. James AME Church works collaboratively with local churches and other community partners to serve as “a spiritual change agent.” The church works with others to bridge the gap that affects the physical, emotional, financial and spiritual well-being of congregants and the community at-large.

The mission of St. James AME Church is to address the ongoing plight of those in the local community. The church works to implement initiatives to address community-wide needs, such as a monthly feed-the-hungry outreach and clothing distribution, summer back-to school and vacation bible outreach, weekly youth and adult bible engagement, seasonal “meal-in-a-box” for the elderly, offerings to support congregant and community members in need and volunteer-manpower to support community needs and causes.

Representative Carl Gilliard represents the citizens of District 162, which includes portions of Chatham County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2016 and currently serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Economic Development and the Creative Arts & Entertainment, Insurance, Interstate Cooperation, Natural Resources & Environment, Reapportionment and Redistricting, State Properties and Transportation committees.
