ATLANTA – State Representative Matt Reeves (R-Duluth) applauds Sugar Hill voters in Gwinnett County for voting in favor of three homestead exemption referenda with 86.77 percent of the vote on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Rep. Reeves sponsored these ballot measures through local legislation, which reduced homeowners’ property taxes in Sugar Hill.
“Sugar Hill voters sent a clear message that they strongly support the American dream of home ownership in the midst of a housing crisis,” said Rep. Reeves. “I applaud the citizens of Sugar Hill and Gwinnett County for their diligent efforts at the polls. I am proud to see the Georgia General Assembly’s efforts to reduce homeowners’ property taxes in Sugar Hill has proven to be a success, providing much-needed relief to local residents.”
The general homestead exemption for homeowners will now increase from $2,000 to $10,000; senior homeowners will see an increase from $4,000 to $20,000; and income-tested disabled senior homeowners will go from $6,000 to $30,000. Every Sugar Hill homeowner will now benefit from decreased property taxes under the referenda approved with 86.77 percent of the vote on November 7, 2023.
Rep. Reeves and a bipartisan group of Gwinnett legislators also sponsored a countywide homeowner property tax referendum to be on the ballot in May 2024 in Gwinnett County, which will be the first referendum of its kind in 35 years in Georgia’s second largest county.
