ATLANTA – State Representatives Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta), Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain) and Sandra Scott (D-Rex) today offer their condolences on the passing of President Jimmy Carter.
“President Carter reminded us that greatness is not found in power or privilege but in service to others,” said Rep. Schofield. “As a fellow Georgian, I am profoundly grateful for the example he set and the pride he brought to Georgia. His vision for a more just and equitable world will forever guide us, and his kindness and humility will never be forgotten.”
“I extend my heartfelt condolences on the passing of President Jimmy Carter,” said Rep. Davis. “The Lord has called His heavenly angel home—a man of unwavering faith who dedicated his life to serving the community, championing peace and uplifting humanity. His extraordinary work, from Habitat for Humanity to earning the Nobel Peace Prize, reflects a legacy of kindness, humility and compassion that will forever inspire generations to come. May his spirit of service guide us all.”
“I had the pleasure of meeting Jimmy Carter while serving in the Georgia General Assembly,” said Rep. Scott. “His words, ‘Stay true to yourself and always serve the people,’ are my guiding truths.”
Together, these representatives issue the following joint statement on President Carter’s passing:
“Today, we mourn the loss of one of Georgia’s most beloved sons, President Jimmy Carter. His life was a testament to servant leadership, unwavering faith and an unyielding commitment to justice and peace. President Carter showed the world what it meant to lead with humility and compassion, both during his time in the Georgia General Assembly, White House and throughout his extraordinary post-presidency. From the peanut farms of Plains, Georgia, to the global stage, he never wavered in his belief in the dignity and potential of every human being. His legacy in human rights, diplomacy and his tireless work through The Carter Center to eradicate disease and strengthen democracy will inspire generations to come.
“President Jimmy Carter was a man of unwavering integrity, humility and a steadfast commitment to serving others. A true legend, he dedicated his life to uplifting the least among us, embodying the values of compassion and hard work.
“Alongside his wife, Rosalynn, he spent countless hours building homes for families through Habitat for Humanity, demonstrating that real leadership means rolling up your sleeves and making a tangible difference. President Carter didn’t just talk about helping others—he lived it, traveling far beyond his beloved Plains, Georgia, to extend his love and care to people across the globe.
“Today, we honor his memory by recommitting ourselves to the ideals he cherished: peace, equity and the belief that together, we can build a better future. May we all intentionally strive to embody his spirit of service and faith in humanity.
“Our heartfelt prayers are with the Carter family, the people of Plains, those in the Georgia General Assembly and all those around the world who mourn his passing. Rest in peace, Mr. President. Your work here is done, but your legacy will endure forever.”
