Rep. Carter Barrett Receives Committee Assignments for the 2025-2026 Legislative Term, Appointed Vice Chairman of Higher Education Committee

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives’ Committee on Assignments, chaired by House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington), recently named State Representative Carter Barrett (R-Cumming) to serve as Vice Chairman of the House Higher Education Committee for the 2025-2026 legislative term. Rep. Barrett was also named a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education, appointed Secretary of the Banks & Banking Committee and reappointed Secretary of the Code Revision Committee.

“I am deeply honored to be appointed Vice Chairman of the Higher Education Committee by Speaker Jon Burns,” said Rep. Barrett. “This position is particularly meaningful for my district, which is home to both the University of North Georgia and Lanier Technical College. As I begin my third year serving in the Georgia House, these new appointments represent a significant milestone in my legislative career. I’m excited about the opportunity to be part of the conversations shaping higher education across Georgia’s educational landscape. I am also thankful for the chance to join the Appropriations Committee and serve as Secretary of both the Code Revision and Banks & Banking committees. These vital roles will allow me to directly influence the policies and funding that affect both our state and House District 24.”

The Higher Education Committee is responsible for legislation influencing the University System of Georgia, the Technical College System of Georgia, universities, colleges, postsecondary education and student financial aid.

The main focus of the Appropriations Committee is the writing of the state’s amended and general fiscal year budgets for Georgia’s state agencies and departments. The committee also hears legislation that has considerable impact on the state revenue or expenditures. The Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education focuses on the allocation of funds within Georgia’s amended and general fiscal year budgets, specifically for the state’s higher education sector.

The Banks & Banking Committee has jurisdiction of financial institutions, real property finance and corporate securities law.

The Code Revision Committee is responsible for technical and grammatical revisions of Georgia’s statutes. Its goal is to revise, modernize and correct errors or omissions in Georgia’s Code and to repeal those portions which have become obsolete, have been declared to be unconstitutional, or have been preempted or superseded by subsequent laws.
