ATLANTA – State Representative Long Tran (D-Dunwoody), chair of the Asian American Pacific Islander Caucus, along with leaders from the Georgia Southeast Asian community, will host a press conference to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Indochina Migration and Refugee Assistance Act on Friday, May 23, 2025, at 7 p.m. at Sweet Hut Bakery Café on Buford Highway.
“Hosting this press conference at Asian Square on Buford Highway is especially meaningful,” said Rep. Tran. “This location has long served as a cultural and economic anchor for Southeast Asian refugee families in Georgia. After resettlement, many Vietnamese, Cambodian, Lao and Hmong families built their lives in this area. Asian Square became a place of connection, community and survival, making it a fitting space to reflect on 50 years of resilience, contributions and shared history.”
The press conference seeks to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Indochina Migration and Refugee Assistance Act, which was signed into law on May 23, 1975. The act was signed into law in response to the humanitarian crisis following the fall of South Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, allowing over 130,000 Southeast Asian refugees to resettle in the United States.
Speakers at the event will include Rep. Tran and representatives from the Cambodian American Association of Georgia, Laotian American Society of Georgia, Vietnamese American Community of Georgia, Georgia AAPI Hub and a Vietnamese War Veteran.
