Rep. Carter Barrett Appointed Chairman of the House Study Committee on Affordability & Accessibility of Georgia’s Legitimation Process

ATLANTA – House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington), recently named State Representative Carter Barrett (R-Cumming) to serve as chairman of the House Study Committee on Affordability & Accessibility of Georgia’s Legitimation Process.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to have a strong, supportive relationship with both parents, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that the path to legal fatherhood is not blocked by unnecessary financial or procedural barriers,” said Rep. Barrett. “I’m honored to be appointed by Speaker Burns to chair the House Study Committee on the Affordability and Accessibility of Georgia’s Legitimation Process and look forward to working with my colleagues to identify meaningful solutions that strengthen families and better serve Georgia’s children.”

Created by House Resolution 753, this study committee will study whether the legitimation process in Georgia may be improved in a way that yields it more affordable and accessible, particularly for those biological fathers with limited financial resources.

Speaker Burns also appointed the following study committee members: State Representative Teddy Reese (D-Columbus), Vice Chairman, State Representative Lynn Heffner (D-Augusta), State Representative Rep. Rob Clifton (R-Evans), and State Representative Vance Smith (R-Pine Mountain).

Representative Carter Barrett represents the citizens of District 24, which includes a portion of Forsyth County. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2022 and currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Higher Education Committee and as Secretary of the Banks & Banking and Code Revision committees. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education.
