Rep. Alan Powell Honored as a Champion for Change by Georgia Commission on Women for Work to Stop Human Trafficking

ATLANTA – State Representative Alan Powell (R-Hartwell), chairman of the House Regulated Industries Committee, was recently named one of the Champions for Change by the Georgia Commission on Women for his work with the GRACE Commission to stop human trafficking.

“I am very humbled to receive the Georgia Commission on Women’s GRACE award for my contributions to stop trafficking and promote counseling,” said Rep. Powell. “The Georgia House is committed to protecting victims of trafficking and prosecuting individuals who target victims and hurt women. Our work to eradicate human trafficking is far from over, and we’ll continue to work on legislation that protects victims and vulnerable individuals at risk for human trafficking.”

The Georgia Commission on Women was created in 1992 by the Georgia General Assembly and Governor Zell Miller to monitor the status, rights and opportunities of women in Georgia. The commission’s efforts are centered around three main pillars—human trafficking, maternal mortality and women’s health—and they partner with other government agencies and organizations across the state to address these issues. Their overarching goal is to continue to advocate for a Georgia where women can thrive.

The GRACE Commission (Georgians for Refuge, Action, Compassion and Education) is a Georgia-based task force launched by First Lady Marty Kemp to combat human trafficking. It focuses on victim support, legislative action and public awareness, partnering with state agencies to train the public and implement anti-trafficking measures.
