ATLANTA – State Representative Robert Dickey (R-Musella), chairman of the House Agriculture & Consumer Affairs Committee, was recently appointed by House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) to serve on the Joint Study Committee on Generational Sustainability of Family Farms.
“As a fourth-generation family farmer, I am proud to be appointed to this study committee because I know first-hand the challenges that Georgia farmers face and how vital it is that we examine ways to continue to support family farms throughout our state,” said Chairman Dickey. “Our farmers play a crucial role in our everyday lives, from the food on our plates to the clothes on our backs. Agriculture is our number one industry in Georgia, and it is both timely and critical that we take an extensive review of how we can help sustain family farming for generations to come.”
Created by Senate Resolution 800, the Joint Study Committee on the Generational Sustainability of Family Farms will evaluate the challenges facing family farms. The study committee will also explore policies and investments that the General Assembly can pursue to support existing markets, develop new and innovative domestic markets, decrease the cost of inputs, adequately prepare the next generation of farmers and address systemic challenges contributing to the declining farm economy.
Speaker Burns also appointed the following study committee members: State Representatives Angie O’Steen (R-Ambrose), Jaclyn Ford (R-Tifton) and David Huddleston (R-Roopville).
