Rep. Cheokas Saves Funding for Visitor Center

ATLANTA – State Representative Mike Cheokas (R-Americus), a member of the Appropriations Committee and Vice Chairman of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight Committee, successfully advocated for the restoration of funds for the Georgia Visitor Information Center in Plains, Georgia.

“This visitor center displays an important piece of our state and national history. It is important to both my constituents and our district’s guests,” said Rep. Cheokas. “I am pleased that the Appropriations Committee decided to maintain a level of funding for this historical center.”

The Georgia Department of Economic Development proposed cutting all state funding to the Plains Visitor Information Center as part of Governor’s proposed Fiscal Year 2013 budget. However, thanks to Rep. Cheokas’ efforts, the House Appropriations Committee only cut the center’s state funding by 2 percent.

“Rep. Cheokas is an effective advocate for his district and the region as a whole,” said House Appropriations Chairman Terry England. “His counsel is valuable to me in the appropriations process, and I appreciate his input.”

The visitor center is located at 1763 U.S. Highway 280, Plains, Georgia 31780. For more information about the visitor’s center, please call Penny Smith at (229) 824-7477.

Representative Mike Cheokas represents the citizens of District 134, which includes Marion, Schley, Sumter counties, as well as portions of Talbot County. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2004, and currently serves as the Vice Chairman of both the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight Committee and the Information and Audits Committee. He also serves as a member of the Appropriations, Health & Human Services, Insurance and State Institutions & Property committees.
