ATLANTA – State Representative Mickey Stephens (D-Savannah) announced that the Georgia House of Representatives included funding in the Fiscal Year 2015 (AFY 2015) budget, the state spending plan from July 1 to June 30, of $2.5 million for Savannah State University. House Bill 744, the FY15 budget, was passed in the House on February 17, 2014.
“I want to thank my colleagues, Representatives Craig Gordon, Bob Bryant, and Ron Stephens, as well as the members of the Appropriations Committee for working together to see the value and necessity of these funds,” said Rep. Stephens. “These funds will benefit the students of Savannah State College greatly, and also help produce a more skilled workforce in our community.”
This additional funding for Savannah State University will go towards renovation and new construction to meet academic facility needs for multiple disciplines in the College of Science and Technology. The project will provide new instructional, research, and office space for Marine Sciences, Engineering Technology, and Mathematics. The degree programs that will be housed in the new facility are all science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs. With this funding, Savannah State University will demolish or replace existing poor quality buildings and allow them to be fully vacated for renovations.
