REP. BUTLER INTRODUCES LEGISLATION SAVING TAXPAYERS FROM STATE TAXES ON FEDERAL STIMULUS CHECKS

ATLANTA—Georgia State Representative Mark Butler (R-Carrolton) has co-sponsored legislation that would preclude the Georgia Department of Revenue from assessing state income tax on the expected 2008 federal stimulus package that is expected to pass the Congress in the near term. Most federal taxpayers will receive between a $600 and $1,200 rebate check from the federal government. House Bill 129 will make the proceeds from the stimulus checks not taxable, thus saving the taxpayer money and enhancing the effort by the Federal Government to stimulate the economy.

“This really is our effort to join the efforts by the Federal Government to help stimulate our economy,” said Rep. Butler. “By eliminating the taxation of the stimulus checks, we don’t erode the value of those checks and pump more money into the system.”

Butler represents State House District 18, which includes parts of Carroll County and Haralson County.
