Rep. Brett Harrell Receives 2016 ACCG Legislative Service Award

ATLANTA – State Representative Brett Harrell (R-Snellville) recently received a 2016 Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) Legislative Service Award.  ACCG presented Rep. Harrell with this award during at the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners meeting on August 16, 2016.

“It is an honor to be recognized by ACCG with this distinction,” said Rep. Harrell.  “As legislators, we are often faced with tough votes, but ultimately, we must do what is in the best interests of those we serve, as well as all Georgians. I am grateful to ACCG for recognizing these efforts.”

ACCG chose to honor Rep. Harrell for his opposition to House Bill 411, a bill which would have increased the truck weight for trucks hauling unprocessed wood to 84,000 pounds on state and local roads, ultimately leading to road deterioration and increased costs to local governments for repairs and maintenance. Rep. Harrell solicited impact from his county, testified against the bill and authorized a minority report opposing a study committee’s support of the legislation.

“ACCG is thankful to Rep. Harrell for his work on opposing HB 411,” said ACCG Associate Legislative Director Todd Edwards.  “His outright determination to prevent heavier trucks from entering Georgia roadways was remarkable.  Rep. Harrell demonstrated how effective communication and collaboration with counties can have positive impact.”

Each year, ACCG presents legislative service awards to recognize Georgia House and Senate members who it believes demonstrate distinguished leadership and interest in working with county governments for the benefit of Georgia’s citizens. The annual awards have gained recognition among elected and appointed officials as a prestigious way to acknowledge Georgia lawmakers for exemplary leadership.

“ACCG is proud to recognize this year’s Legislative Service Award recipients for their devoted service to Georgia’s counties,” said ACCG Executive Director Ross King. “Their efforts are a true reflection of government working collaboratively for the overall benefit of its citizens.”

ACCG is Georgia’s county association and works on behalf of county officials and their communities by providing public policy and legislative advocacy, leadership development, civic and community engagement initiatives, insurance and retirement programs that specialize in local government needs and other cost-saving programs.  Formed in 1914 when county officials came together to help fund the state’s first highway department, ACCG today serves as a catalyst for advancing Georgia’s counties.
