ATLANTA – State Representative Henry “Wayne” Howard (D-Augusta) led the Georgia House of Representatives in honoring the life and memory of Sgt. Gregory Meagher, a Richmond County Sheriff’s Department deputy who died in the line of duty, with House Resolution 1410 on Wednesday, March 7, 2018.
“My House colleagues and I recently honored Sgt. Meagher in the House Chamber for his heroism and courage,” said Rep. Howard. “Sgt. Meagher was one of the most noble, patriotic and selfless citizens of Georgia. His ultimate sacrifice for his community saved the life of a young lady, and it was a great privilege to lead the House in extending our condolences to his family and honoring his life.”
Sgt. Meagher began working for the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office in 1984, and he served on the patrol division, SWAT team and Narcotics Division of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. He also served as a task force officer on the Drug Enforcement Agency. Sgt. Meagher was dedicated to serving his fellow officers as a mentor, and as a police-shooting survivor, he helped other officers manage post-traumatic stress related to police shootings.
Sgt. Meagher died on Feb. 5, 2017, while rescuing a woman from a fatal chemical leak. Sgt. Meagher leaves behind three children and a grandchild.
