ATLANTA – On the first day of the 2009 Legislative Session, Representative Jan Jones, representing the North Fulton House Delegation, introduced House Resolution 21. This proposed amendment to the Constitution of the State of Georgia provides for the re-creation of Milton County. The original Milton County merged with Fulton County in 1931 to avoid bankruptcy during the Depression.
“The mandate to re-create Milton County becomes clearer and more pressing with each new disclosure of the continuing failure of Fulton County to provide adequate basic government functions,” said Representative Jones.
The North Fulton House Delegation is composed of Representatives Mark Burkhalter, Jan Jones, Harry Geisinger, Chuck Martin, Joe Wilkinson and Wendell Willard. The entire group signed the legislation and intends to push for a vote on the resolution this year.
This constitutional amendment has been a top priority of the North Fulton House Delegation for several years, and will require the support of 2/3 of the House.
“A 2/3 majority is a high threshold but our constituents have clearly expressed that they feel poorly served by Fulton County. The future Milton County residents demand more local control and oversight of local issues,” said Jones. “The North Fulton House Delegation is going to pull out all the stops to give their constituents what they want and what they pay for – their own county responsive to the local area voters.”
