Rep. Efstration Named 2019 Legislator of the Year by Mothers Against Drunk Driving

ATLANTA – State Representative Chuck Efstration (R-Dacula) was recently named a 2019 Legislator of the Year by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for his efforts to close a loophole in Georgia’s implied consent refusal law and his work to improve the state’s ignition interlock law.

“I am honored to be named a legislator of the year by MADD,” said Rep. Efstration. “As a state legislator, it is my responsibility to protect Georgia families and ensure that our roadways remain safe for all drivers. I will continue to help promote MADD’s important mission by advocating for and supporting legislation that will help eliminate fatalities caused by drunk driving on Georgia roads.”

Rep. Efstration was one of 45 state lawmakers from across the country who were honored for playing a major role in MADD’s mission to eliminate drunk driving, which is still the leading cause of death on U.S. roads, and their commitment to saving lives. Many of the 2019 Legislators of the Year played a role in MADD’s Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving, which was launched in 2006. A key component of this campaign calls for all-offender interlock laws, which require the use of an ignition interlock for any convicted drunk driver who seeks driving privileges during a license suspension.

Other components of the campaign include supporting high-visibility law enforcement, such as sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols, advocating for the development of advanced alcohol detection technology in all new vehicles and taking personal responsibility by always planning ahead for a non-drinking driver when plans include alcohol.

As chairman of the House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee, Rep. Efstration held hearings on House Bill 471 during the 2019 legislative session, which revised a Georgia statute to allow refusal for chemical DUI testing to be used against a defendant in court.
