ATLANTA – The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC), chaired by State Representative Karen Bennett (D-Stone Mountain), today issued the following statement in response to recent actions taken by Governor Brian Kemp and the Georgia General Assembly regarding the novel coronavirus, COVID-19:
“On Monday, March 16, my colleagues and I supported measures to expand the powers and authority of the executive branch in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. We intend to remain engaged to ensure the governor uses his authority responsibly, justly and equitably. It is unfortunate, but this crisis we are facing underscores why the state needs to invest more in our health care infrastructure, especially in rural counties. When we reconvene for the legislative session, our conversation as a legislative body has to shift towards providing all residents access to quality, affordable health care.
“On behalf of all 65 caucus members and our associates, I want to encourage every Georgian to act with caution during this unprecedented time. Please learn about COVID-19 and how best to protect yourself and those you care about. It is in these harsh times when our state shines most. Take care of your neighbor as you would take care of your family. Only by working together can we overcome this crisis.”
