ATLANTA – Yesterday the Committee on Assignments, chaired by Speaker Glenn Richardson, announced the committee assignments for the 2009 – 2010 legislative sessions. Representative Barbara Sims was appointed Secretary of State Planning and Community Affairs Committee and member of the Economic Development and Tourism; Health and Human Services; and Transportation Committees.
This will be Rep. Sims’ first term as a member of the Economic Development and Tourism Committee.
“Requesting and receiving the committee on Economic Development and Tourism is certainly an exciting and challenging assignment. Our first meeting was a joint meeting with Senate and House committee members hearing information from the Board of Realtors and the Builders Association,” said Rep. Sims. “This is an opportunity to work diligently to help improve a number of issues facing the housing industry. We have already formed sub-committees to expedite solutions needed to assist the housing industry. My focus remains in improving health care, assisting in job creation and working with transportation issues.”
The Committee on Assignments is chaired by the Speaker and includes several other members of House leadership. This committee is in charge of deciding House Floor seating, office, and committee assignments. The committee was first created in 2005 in an attempt to make a more open selection process.
“Congratulations to Representative Sims on her assignments and responsibilities as we start the 2009 Session,” said Speaker Glenn Richardson. “The assignments announced today represent the right balance of skills, leadership and experience to continue leading the House.”
