Anti-Bullying Legislation Supported by Representative Mike Glanton Signed into Law

ATLANTA – Today Senate Bill 250, an anti-bullying bill carried in the House by Representatives Mike Glanton (D-Jonesboro), Mike Jacobs (R-Atlanta), and Kevin Levitas (D-Atlanta), was signed into law by Governor Sonny Perdue.   This piece of legislation strengthens Georgia’s anti-bullying laws by giving schools a greater ability to address bullying problems.

“The measures included in SB 250 dramatically improve Georgia’s current bullying laws,” said Representative Glanton.  “This new law ensures that Georgia’s schools, educators, and parents have the resources and guidelines in place to successfully handle bullying problems.”

SB 250 expands and clarifies the definition of “bullying” in Georgia public schools, allows corrective action to be taken in any grade level, and requires the Department of Education to develop a model bullying policy for its member schools.  It also requires parental notification for students involved in bullying incidents.

Representatives Jacobs, Glanton, and Levitas were joined at today’s bill signing by the family of Jaheem Herrara, a DeKalb County 11-year-old who committed suicide after he was a victim of school bullying.
