Controversial Bills in Georgia Raise Concerns Over Elected District Attorneys

            In 2023, Georgia’s governor signed Senate Bill 92 into law, introducing a contentious provision that allows for the removal of elected district attorneys from office if they are perceived as not adequately enforcing the law. This move has ignited a fierce debate, with many viewing it as a thinly veiled power grab aimed at ousting Democratic prosecutors, particularly those who have expressed reluctance to prosecute abortion-related crimes. The subsequent House Bill 881 has added fuel to the fire, deepening concerns about partisan control over prosecutorial decisions and its potential implications for ongoing criminal investigations. Furthermore, House Bill 983 proposes the repeal of the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission (PAQC) in the state of Georgia, amplifying the controversy.

Reps. Brad Thomas and Todd Jones Introduce Legislation on Artificial Intelligence

Legislation would Audit AI Across all State Agencies, Establish Felony Offenses for AI Election Interference

ATLANTA – State Representatives Brad Thomas (R-Holly Springs) and Todd Jones (R-South Forsyth) recently introduced two pieces of legislation related to artificial intelligence (AI) and certain offenses for election interference, House Bill 986 and House Bill 988. HB 986, also known as the “AI Transparency and Protection Act” would create criminal felony offenses of election interference carried out by AI. HB 988 would require the Georgia Technology Authority to audit all artificial intelligence usage by state agencies.

House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration and Senator Clint Dixon Applaud Senate Passage of Mulberry Cityhood Bill

ATLANTA – House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration (R-Auburn) and Senator Clint Dixon (R-Gwinnett) applauded today’s passage by the Senate of SB 333, legislation to create the City of Mulberry in northeastern Gwinnett County. If passed in the House and signed by the Governor, SB 333 would place the question of cityhood on the spring primary ballot for residents in the proposed city.

DeKalb County House Legislative Delegation to Hold Meetings with DeKalb County Charter Review Commission & DeKalb Municipal Association

ATLANTA – DeKalb County House Delegation Chair Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates) and Vice Chair Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain), along with members of the DeKalb County House Legislative Delegation, will hold a meeting with the Honorable Steve Henson and the DeKalb County Charter Review Commission on Monday, February 5, 2024, at 12 p.m. in room 502 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building in Atlanta. This meeting has been CANCELLED. Additionally, these legislators will meet with DeKalb Municipal Association (DMA) on Monday, February 12, 2024, at 12 p.m. in room 514 of the Coverdell Legislative Office Building in Atlanta.
