House Passes Legislation to Enhance Consumer Protection

ATLANTA— The Georgia House of Representatives passed House Bill 289 with a vote of 175 – 1 on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Introduced by state Representative Trey Kelley (R-Cedartown), HB 289 clarifies when remittance transfers will be applicable within the Uniform Commercial Code operating under the federal Electronic Fund Transfer Act, also known as the Dodd-Frank Act.

“This is an important piece of legislation because it works for both individuals and businesses,” said Rep. Kelley. “I am glad to help improve our state’s financial climate by providing necessary certainty to our financial institutions while being in tune with consumer needs which were damaged under the federal Dodd-Frank Act.”

Rep. Atwood Sponsors Job Creating Tax Exemption

ATLANTA — The Georgia House of Representatives today passed House Bill 164 by a vote of 169-3, showing broad bi-partisan support for the bill. Introduced by state Representative Alex Atwood (R-Brunswick), HB 164 would make extend an existing sales tax exemption for aviation parts used to repair and maintain out-of-state airplanes that is scheduled to automatically expire on July 1, 2013.

House Passes the Parent and Teacher Empowerment Act

ATLANTA — The Georgia House of Representatives passed House Bill 123, the Parent and Teacher Empowerment Act, by a vote of 97-74, on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. Introduced by State Representative Edward Lindsey (R-Atlanta), this legislation would allow parents of any traditional public school to petition their local school board to convert their school into a public charter school. This bill is intended to engage students, inspire teachers, and involve parents in their children’s education.

Rep. Stephens Participates in Canada Border Study Tour to Promote Automobile Industry in the South

ATLANTA – State Representative Ron Stephens (R-Savannah) recently participated in a Border Study Tour of the border between Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The Border Study Tour was designed to educate state legislators about the U.S.-Canada economic partnership and benefits that border initiatives may have for Georgia and other Southern states.
