ATLANTA – The Chatham County Legislative Gang Prevention and Intervention Commission, chaired by State Representative Carl Gilliard (D-Garden City), will host a series of pop-up town hall events for the “912 Rescue Mission” initiative TOMORROW, Saturday, November 13, 2021, from 12 – 4 p.m. at 10 different locations in Savannah.
“I am looking forward to hearing directly from Chatham County about how to prevent gang and youth violence,” said Rep. Gilliard. “These micro events across the city are designed to learn about the specific and unique needs of these different communities. Feedback from residents will greatly contribute to the ‘912 Rescue Mission,’ and the commission is ready to hear from these communities.”
The events will take place simultaneously at the following Savannah area subdivisions and locations: Bayview, Hudson Hill Park, Kennedy Park (Carver Village), Paradise Park, Sunset Park, Westlake, Summerside Ave., 39th St. and Waters Ave. intersection, Alaska St. and Pennsylvania Ave. intersection and the Eagle St & Augusta Ave. intersection.
Additionally, the Chatham County Legislative Prevention and Intervention Commission will partner with Cumulus Media to host a town hall meeting on the WEAS Radio and Magic Radio stations on Sunday, November 14, 2021, from 7 – 8 p.m.
The “912 Rescue Mission” initiative was developed by the commission’s subcommittee that focuses on intervention strategies and will feature quarterly events for residents to provide input and ideas for the commission.
The commission seeks to spur collaborative efforts between educational institutions and community organizations in order to implement programs to prevent and intervene in youth gang participation in Chatham County. The commission will also provide information and guidance to local organizations that combat criminal gang participation. The commission will submit an annual report to the Chatham County Legislative Delegation ahead of the 2022 legislative session. During the 2021 legislative session, Rep. Gilliard sponsored House Bill 750 to create this commission.
