ATLANTA – The Chatham County Legislative Gang Prevention and Intervention Commission, chaired by State Representative Carl Gilliard (D-Garden City), will hold its fourth meeting on Monday, August 16, 2021, at 8:45 a.m. at the Savannah College of Art and Design (Arnold Hall) in Savannah. Rep. Gilliard will hold a press conference at 8:45 a.m., and the commission meeting will begin immediately following the press conference.
Rep. Gilliard will be joined by Chester A. Ellis, chairman of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners. This meeting will focus on agencies and organizations that are working toward breaking the recidivism of violence and prevention of youth involvement in gang activity. All of the municipalities in Chatham have been invited to focus on developing “One plan, One Effort, One Chatham.”
The commission seeks to spur collaborative efforts between educational institutions and community organizations in order to implement programs that are designed to prevent and intervene in youth gang participation in Chatham County. The commission will also provide information and guidance to local organizations that combat criminal gang participation. The commission will submit an annual report to the Chatham County Legislative Delegation ahead of the 2022 legislative session. During the 2021 legislative session, Rep. Gilliard sponsored House Bill 750 to create this commission.
