ATLANTA — State Representative Christian Coomer (R-Cartersville) today announced that the city of Adairsville has been awarded a 2016 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for the construction of a new Boys & Girls Clubhouse from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA), which administers the program on behalf of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Adairsville was one of only 74 Georgia communities awarded a CDBG this year.
“I am pleased to announce that Adairsville has been awarded a CDBG to build a new Boys & Girls Club facility to better serve the children and teens in Bartow County,” said Rep. Coomer. “I would like to thank Governor Deal and the Department of Community Affairs for their leadership on this initiative and understanding and addressing the critical needs of our communities. It is through programs like this that we will continue to improve the quality of life for our citizens, build better communities, as well as a better Georgia.”
The City of Adairsville, in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Bartow County, will receive $500,000 in CDBG funds for a new building to house the Boys and Girls Club to replace the current facility which is outdated and inadequate in size and facilities. The project will benefit 118 individuals, many who are low to moderate income. The project includes the construction of a new 4,500 square-foot building on a 2.35-acre tract of land which allows adequate space and room for future expansion needs. The total project cost is $967,855 with $467,855 in match and leverage.
Georgia’s CDBG program annually awards projects in small and rural communities that create jobs and assist low- and moderate-income citizens. Awards ranging from $226,944 to $800,000 are used for specific projects such as water, sewer, drainage or street improvements, revitalization of targeted neighborhoods, and construction of facilities such as health, youth and senior centers. Communities are required to complete their designated project within two years of the award.
The Georgia Department of Community Affairs partners with communities to create a climate of success for Georgia’s families and businesses through community and economic development, local government assistance, and safe and affordable housing. Using state and federal resources, DCA helps communities spur private job creation, implement planning, develop downtowns, generate affordable housing solutions, and promote volunteerism. DCA also helps qualified low- and moderate- income Georgians buy homes, rent housing, and prevent foreclosure and homelessness.
