Withdraws Appointment of Rep. Mesha Mainor to Comply with Legislation
ATLANTA – Speaker of the House Jon Burns (R-Newington) announced today that, pursuant to the provisions of Senate Bill 211, he has withdrawn the appointment of Rep. Mesha Mainor (R-Atlanta) to the Georgia Council on Literacy and filled the vacancy by appointing Rep. Al Williams (D-Midway) to the Council.
Senate Bill 211 prescribed that among the members appointed to the Council by the Speaker of the House were “two members of the House of Representatives from the minority caucus.” Representative Mainor was one of the two such members appointed by Speaker Burns last month.
At the time, Rep. Mainor was a member of the minority caucus but has subsequently changed her party affiliation. As such, Rep. Mainor’s appointment is being withdrawn to comply with the provisions of Senate Bill 211.
Representative Williams’ appointment is effective immediately.

***Editor’s Note: A July 18, 2023, version of this release incorrectly listed Rep. Becky Evans (D-Atlanta) as filling the vacancy. Rep. Evans was previously appointed to and remains a member of the Council. As such, Rep. Evans and Rep. Williams are the two members of the minority caucus appointed to the Council.
