Georgia House Democratic Caucus Issues Statement on Defeat of House Bill 435

ATLANTA – The Georgia House Democratic Caucus, led by House Minority Leader James Beverly (D-Macon), today issued the following statement regarding the defeat of House Bill 435 by the Georgia House of Representatives on Wednesday, March 3, 2021:

“House Bill 435 could have provided local governments to expand the use of prison labor in ways that take advantage of a vulnerable population. Until we get more answers on how this bill would protect Georgia’s working conditions, the minority caucus will continue to oppose the measure. We are ready to work towards fair labor practices for all Georgians, including our incarcerated population.”

Representative James Beverly represents the citizens of District 143, which includes portions of Bibb County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2011 and currently serves as House Minority Leader. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation and on the Ethics, Health & Human Services, Retirement, Rules, Small Business Development and Special Rules committees.
