ATLANTA – State Representative “Able” Mable Thomas (D-Atlanta) recognized participants of the “Green Respect for Mother Earth” walk at the state capitol on Tuesday, March 26, 2013. The walk is an environmental awareness initiative in which participants walk from Washington D.C. to Tuskegee, Alabama.
“I was honored to host this distinguished group at the Capitol. Raising awareness about environmental pollution continues to be a very important topic,” added Rep. Thomas.
In addition to generally recognizing the “Green Respect for Mother Earth” walk and its participants, Rep. Thomas also led the Georgia House of Representatives in commending the event’s leaders through the passage of House Resolution 838 and House Resolution 839. These resolutions commend Audri Scott Williams and Sri Charles Davis for their dedication to environmental awareness.
Audri Scott Williams, the co-founder of the Quantum Leap Transformational Center, has participated in many peace pilgrimages and environmental walks throughout the world. She is also a Global Trustee for the United Religions Initiative (URI). Ms. Williams is the first African American woman to walk around the world for peace. House Resolution 839 recognizes Sri Charles Davis as one of America’s leading proponents of the Ayurvedic science of Agnihotra (Homa Therapy), the process of purifying our environment and atmosphere of pollution, stress and disease . Mr. Davis has been practicing Agnihotra for 35 years, and has been instrumental in the spread of Agnihotra around the world. He is also the founder and custodian of the organization sponsoring the “Green Respect for Mother Earth” walk, the Heal the Atmosphere Association (HTAA). The “Green Respect for Mother Earth” walk is an ongoing event that began on March 1, 2013 and will continue through April 13, 2013. During the first six legs of the walk, participants walked from the Washington Monument to Atlanta over a period of approximately 20 days. On March 28th, participants began the seventh leg of the walk, which takes them to Montgomery, Alabama. Participants will then end the event next week by walking to Shanti Villa Green Eco-Center in Tuskegee, Alabama.
The focus of “Green Respect for Mother Earth ” is to remind people that each day of the year should be treated as Earth Day. The goals for the movement are to keep environmental concerns in the public eye, and to exchange ideas and present solutions.
“Their primary focus is to bring awareness to the fact that pollution is one of the major causes of deaths on our planet,” added Rep. Thomas. “President Obama has said ‘Go Green,’ but the fact is most people do not know what that means. With their 1300 mile ‘Green Respect for Mother Earth’ walk they hope to share with communities what Going Green really means and also share solutions.”
The “Green Respect for Mother Earth” walk was organized by the Heal the Atmosphere Association (HTAA). HTAA is non-profit environmental organization that was founded in 1978, making it the nation’s oldest African American environmental organization. The organization is based in Tuskegee, Alabama, at Shanti Villa Green Eco Center where it provides daily programs and activities to the public, focused on raising awareness on how to go “green.”
