ATLANTA – Several Georgia legislators recently participated in a conference call to discuss establishing a statewide legislative agenda to enhance community relations in their districts and throughout the state of Georgia.
Legislators who participated in the call included: Representatives James Beverly (D-Macon), Roger Bruce (D-Atlanta), Park Cannon (D-Atlanta), Winfred Dukes (D-Albany), Virgil Fludd (D-Tyrone), LaDawn Jones (D-Atlanta), Billy Mitchell (D-Stone Mountain), Sandra Scott (D-Rex), Keisha Waites (D-Atlanta) and State Senator Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta).
“We care about the racial crisis facing our state and our country as a whole, and we want to hear from our constituents,” said Rep. Waites.
“My fellow legislators and I will continue to respond to any injustices in our communities and our state and work towards a better Georgia,” said Rep. Scott.
“We look forward to more conversations and actions in hopes of bringing about effective changes in our communities,” said Rep. Cannon.
During the conference call, legislators shared personal insights regarding racial issues and power misuse, both in law enforcement settings and elsewhere, within their districts in an effort to find a meaningful course of action.
“As a nation, we have been riveted by images highlighting the use of excessive force by law enforcement in communities of color,” said Rep. Beverly.
“We agree that we should hold public hearings throughout the state on the use of excessive force,” said Rep. Dukes.
These legislators intend to meet with government officials and constituents, hold statewide press conferences and host public hearings and town hall meetings across the state. More information on these meetings will be forthcoming as it is made available.
Representative James Beverly represents the citizens of District 143, which includes portions of Bibb County. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2011 and is currently a member of the Health & Human Services, Retirement, Small Business Development, and Special Rules committees.
Representative Roger Bruce represents the citizens of District 61, which includes portions of Cobb, Douglas, and Fulton counties. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2002 and currently serves on the Game, Fish, & Parks, Human Relations & Aging, Judiciary, and Small Business Development committees.
Representative Park Cannon represents the citizens of District 58, which includes portions of Fulton County. She was elected into the House of Representatives in 2016, and currently serves on the Code Revision, Human Relations & Aging, and Small Business Development committees.
Representative Winfred Dukes represents the citizens of District 154, which includes Baker County, as well as portions of Dougherty, Miller, and Seminole counties. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 1996, and currently serves on the Agriculture & Consumer Affairs, Economic Development & Tourism, Special Rules, and State Planning & Community Affairs committees.
Representative Virgil Fludd represents the citizens of District 64, which includes portions of Fayette and Fulton counties. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2002, and currently serves on the Banks & Banking, Ethics, Regulated Industries, Small Business Development, and Ways & Means committees.
Representative LaDawn “LBJ” Jones represents the citizens of District 62, which includes portions of Douglas and Fulton counties. She was elected into the House of Representatives in 2012, and currently serves on the Budget & Fiscal Affairs Oversight, Judiciary, Small Business Development, and State Properties committees.
Representative Billy Mitchell represents the citizens of District 88, which includes portions of DeKalb County. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2002, and currently serves on the Health & Human Services, MARTOC, and Regulated Industries committees.
Representative Sandra Scott represents the citizens of District 76, which includes portions of Clayton and Henry counties. She was first elected into the House Representatives in 2010, and currently serves on the Human Relations & Aging, Legislative & Congressional Reapportionment, Science & Technology, and Special Rules committees.
Representative Keisha Waites represents the citizens of District 60, which includes portions of Clayton and Fulton counties. She was elected into the House of Representatives in 2012, and currently serves on the Interstate Cooperation, Juvenile Justice, Public Safety & Homeland Security, Special Rules, and Transportation committees.
