ATLANTA – State Representative Randy Nix (R-LaGrange) announced today that the Georgia House of Representatives included funding in the Amended Fiscal Year 2014 (AFY 2014) state budget totaling $1,726,529 for the Troup County Board of Education. Rep. Nix, who led the efforts to secure this one time allocation, made the announcement following today’s House passage of House Bill 743. The AFY 2014 budget is the state’s mid-year spending plan which helps fund the final few months of the current fiscal year.
“I want to thank Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Education Tom Dickson, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee Terry England, the Governor’s Office, and especially the House Budget Office and Research Office for their willingness to take the time to understand this very complex issue,” said Rep. Nix. “Also, I thank Rep. John Pezold and Rep. Carl Von Epps for their support and persistence in requesting this adjustment.”
This additional funding for Troup County is intended to restore funds from 2012 which went unappropriated as a result of incorrect property values in the county’s tax digest. The tax digest was over inflated as initially reported to the Department of Revenue due to recent major development projects and their impact on the tax digest, which decreased the amount of funding made available for Troup County Schools. The tax digest was resubmitted in FY 2013 and the General Assembly appropriated $3.8M to Troup County to properly reflect their earnings. In the AFY 2014 House version of the Appropriations bill, $1,726,529 in earnings was added for Troup County Schools to properly reflect the system’s allocation. These funds will impact approximately 12,216 students.
“The budget will now go to the Senate for their consideration,” added Rep. Nix. “Senators Mike Crane and Josh McKoon have already pledged their support for these funds.”
