House Democratic Caucus Issues Statement on the Passing of President Jimmy Carter

ATLANTA – On behalf of the Georgia House Democratic Caucus, Minority Leader Carolyn Hugley (D-Columbus) offers condolences to the Carter family on the passing of President Jimmy Carter at the age of 100:

“As one of Georgia’s most beloved sons, President Carter was a visionary global leader whose unwavering commitment to service, integrity and deeply rooted spiritual faith profoundly impacted the world. His extraordinary character, courage and humanity will continue to inspire future generations.

“President Jimmy Carter, admired leader of our nation, naval officer, global human rights activist, Nobel Peace Prize winner, fly fisherman, farmer, poet, builder, artist, cherished father, loving husband and benevolent humanitarian, leaves an entire nation as beneficiaries of his tremendous servant leadership.

“James Earl Carter Jr. was born in Plains, Georgia on October 1, 1924, to James Earl Carter Sr. and Lillian Gordy Carter. After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1946, he married Rosalynn Smith, and the couple made their home in Plains, Georgia. Together, they raised three sons—John William (Jack), James Earl III (Chip) and Donnel Jeffrey (Jeff)—as well as a daughter, Amy Lynn. Their family grew to include 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Throughout his life, President Carter found joy and purpose in farming, politics, a love for the arts and nature and an unwavering devotion to his family and faith.

“Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, served from 1977 to 1981 and was the first President from the State of Georgia. His distinguished career included serving as the 76th Governor of Georgia and as a Georgia State Senator. He was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his relentless efforts to resolve international conflicts, promote democracy and human rights and advance economic development worldwide.

“President Carter’s leadership was defined by bold, forward-thinking policies that promoted environmental sustainability, safeguarding natural resources and promoting good governance. He was an advocate for public education, the de-stigmatization of mental health care and the dismantling of systemic gender and racial inequalities. On behalf of the Georgia House Democratic Caucus, we will keep President Jimmy Carter’s legacy alive by striving to fulfill his vision of a more peaceful world where respect for humanity and equal rights for all is lifted in perpetuity.”
