House Majority Whip James Burchett Announces Whip Team for the 2026 Legislative Session, Appoints New Deputy Whip

ATLANTA – Georgia House Majority Caucus Whip James Burchett (R-Waycross) today announced his Majority Caucus Whip Team for the 2026 legislative session. The team includes the new appointment of State Representative Carter Barrett (R-Cumming), who will serve as a deputy whip.

“One of the best parts of serving as House Majority Whip is the chance to serve with devoted deputy whips from around the state who bring differing perspectives to our conversations about important legislation,” said Whip Burchett. “I look forward to continuing to serve with Chief Deputy Leverett and our returning deputies, and welcome Representative Barrett to the whip team this year.”

State Representative Rob Leverett (R-Elberton) will continue to serve as the chief deputy whip.

“I’m pleased to be returning as chief deputy whip and look forward to serving with Whip Burchett, Representative Barrett and the entire whip team as we continue to serve our caucus and our state,” said Chief Deputy Whip Leverett.

“I’m honored to have the chance to represent my Forsyth County constituents as a member of the whip team, bringing their perspectives to leadership,” said Deputy Whip Barrett.

Whip Burchett looks forward to continuing his service alongside Chief Deputy Whip Leverett and Deputy Whips Bethany Ballard (R-Warner Robins), Chas Cannon (R-Moultrie), Johnny Chastain (R-Blue Ridge), Rob Clifton (R-Evans), Brent Cox (R-Dawsonville), Sandy Donatucci (R-Buford), Derrick McCollum (R-Chestnut Mountain), Matt Reeves (R-Duluth) and Bill Yearta (R-Sylvester), and welcomes new Deputy Whip Carter Barrett (R-Cumming).

Members of the Whip Team are responsible for monitoring legislation as it moves through committee and floor consideration in the Georgia General Assembly, ensuring their fellow House members understand the details of bills and resolutions.

Representative James Burchett represents the citizens of District 176, which includes Lanier County, as well as portions of Coffee, Atkinson, Lowndes and Ware counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 and currently serves as the House Majority Whip. He also serves on the Appropriations, Appropriations Subcommittee on Judicial, Ethics, Judiciary, Judiciary Non-Civil, Public and Community Health, Rural Development, State Properties and Transportation committees, as well as an Ex-Officio member of the Rules Committee.

Representative Rob Leverett represents the citizens of District 123, which includes Elbert, Lincoln and Wilkes counties, as well as portions of Columbia and Madison counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2020 and currently serves as Chairman of the Reapportionment & Redistricting Committee, Vice Chairman of the Rules Committee and Secretary of the Judiciary Committee. He also serves on the Agriculture & Consumer Affairs, Governmental Affairs and Judiciary Non-Civil committees.

Representative Carter Barrett represents the citizens of District 24, which includes a portion of Forsyth County. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2022 and currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the Higher Education Committee and as Secretary of the Banks & Banking and Code Revision committees. He also serves on the Ways and Means and Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education.
