House Majority Whip James Burchett Releases Statement in Support of Members of the Georgia House

ATLANTA – Georgia House Majority Caucus Whip James Burchett (R-Waycross) today issues the following statement:

“As a part time legislature, the Georgia General Assembly relies on state senators and state representatives who hold full time jobs in their communities, allowing them to support their families as they serve their neighbors. This structure ensures we stay connected to our communities at home year-round.

Numerous members have suffered threats to their livelihoods and independence because of their votes on Senate Bill 68. These retaliations undermine the strengths of our citizen legislature, which depends on members voting their conscience after fully weighing the issues and determining what they think is best for their communities and our state.

I believe I speak for all Georgians when I say we should hold legislators accountable for their votes under the Gold Dome at the ballot box – not by taking aim at their ability to support their families.

Being cancelled is not something that this House ascribes to, and there is no place for that in Georgia government.”

Representative James Burchett represents the citizens of District 176, which includes all of Atkinson and Lanier counties as well as portions of Coffee, Lowndes and Ware counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 and currently serves as the House Majority Whip. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Judicial, Ethics, Energy, Utilities & Telecommunications, Judiciary Non-Civil, Public & Community Health, Rural Development, State Properties and Transportation committees, as well as an Ex-Officio member of the Rules Committee.
