House Speaker David Ralston Names Rep. Tom Weldon Secretary of the Retirement Committee

ATLANTA- State Representative Tom Weldon (R-Ringgold) has been named secretary of the House Retirement Committee. House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) made the announcement during the first week of the legislative session.

“Tom Weldon is an outstanding leader and has already established himself as a respected and trusted member of the House,” said House Speaker David Ralston. “I know he will serve in this position with distinction and continue to assume greater leadership responsibilities in the future.”

The House of Representatives Retirement Committee oversees legislation pertaining to the Georgia Employees’ Retirement Systems (ERS), as well as the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia (TRS). According to the Employees’ Retirement System, it administers separate and distinct cost-sharing, multiple employer-defined benefit pension plans for various employer agencies of the State of Georgia, as well as defined contribution plans and a life insurance plan. They also administer benefits for 130,000 active employees and over 52,000 retirees and manage the investments for a $13 billion fund. All plans are funded by a combination of employee and employer contributions.

The Teachers Retirement System of Georgia manages the retirement accounts of over 300,000 non-retired (active) members and pays a monthly benefit to over 82,000 retired members and survivors. TRS retiree payroll is in excess of 2.5 billion dollars per year.

Representative Weldon will also continue to serve on the Banks and Banking, Code Revision, and Judiciary Committees.
