House Speaker Jon Burns Names Rep. Chris Erwin Chairman of the House Study Committee on Student Attendance in PreK-12 Education

ATLANTA – State Representative Chris Erwin (R-Homer), chairman of the House Education Committee, was recently appointed by House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) to serve as chairman of the House Study Committee on Student Attendance in PreK-12 Education.

“As someone who has dedicated my career to education, I’m honored to chair this study committee and continue working to strengthen Georgia’s public schools,” said Chairman Erwin. “Student attendance is one of the most critical — and often overlooked — factors in academic success. When students miss school, they miss opportunities. This committee will take a close look at what’s driving chronic absenteeism and how we can better support students and families in staying engaged. I’m committed to ensuring every child in Georgia has a real chance to learn, grow, and thrive.”

Created by House Resolution 711, this study committee will a provide a comprehensive review of student attendance in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 to examine the root causes of chronic absenteeism, evaluate best practices for improving student attendance and engagement and recommend legislative and policy initiatives to improve student attendance and engagement.

Speaker Burns also appointed the following study committee members: State Representative Matt Dubnik (R-Gainesville), State Representative Rick Townsend (R-Brunswick), State Representative Sandy Donatucci (R-Buford), State Representative Will Wade (R-Dawsonville) and State Representative Lydia Glaize (D-Fairburn).

Representative Chris Erwin represents the citizens of District 32, which includes Banks and Stephens counties, as well as portions of Habersham and Jackson counties. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2018 and currently serves as Chairman of the Education Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Education, Insurance, Intragovernmental Coordination, Retirement, Rules and State Planning & Community Affairs committees.
