ATLANTA – House Minority Leader James Beverly (D-Macon) and State Representatives Rhonda Burnough (D-Riverdale) and Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) will participate in the School Social Workers Association of Georgia’s Day at the Capitol press conference on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at 10 a.m. at the South Wing of the State Capitol.
During the press conference, the School Social Workers Association of Georgia will discuss their recent advocacy efforts, as well as the work that the association has been doing to address mental health needs for children and families in Georgia.
“I salute Georgia’s school social workers – key public servants and leaders that hold together the fabric of this great state,” said Leader Beverly. “As the political landscape of the Georgia House changes, it is critical that we continue to value their essential work and ensure that all social workers are given the resources they need for our communities to thrive.”
“In light of everything going on in our society and the effects on students and parents, it is imperative that we provide our social workers with additional resources,” said Rep. Burnough. “During COVID, these individuals were the face of the school districts because they were going to homes and setting up food pick-ups to make sure the needs of the families were met.”
“The presence and role of school social workers is extremely critical to addressing and supporting the needs of students, families and communities,” said Rep. Schofield. “They are skilled and offer resources that identify a myriad of social determinants that often go unnoticed. One of the biggest needs within our schools is mental health services. Georgia must make a strong investment in our school social workers to further help us close the gaps in disparities and move us closer to equity.”
