ATLANTA – State Representatives Sandra Scott (D-Rex), Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) and David Wilkerson (D-Powder Springs) will host the first of a series of virtual town hall meetings to discuss the state of Georgia’s jails on Monday, January 25, 2021, at 10 a.m. via Zoom. During this initial town hall meeting, these legislators will hear from those who have lost family members in Georgia jails, as well as address the need to have greater accountability to prevent future deaths. Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens will also present his plans to improve the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.
These legislators plan to hold additional town hall meetings to discuss the need for improved mental health services in local jails and call for increased funding from the state.
“We expect to hear from families about their struggle to get answers following the death of a loved one in a local jail and why there is a need for statewide oversight,” said Rep. Wilkerson. “As state legislators, we also recognize the strain on our jails may be caused by the lack of adequate resources for mental health services in Georgia. The state needs to dedicate funding in the budget to address this dangerous and unacceptable problem.”
