ATLANTA – State Representative Al Williams (D-Macon) recently was appointed to the Rules Subcommittee on Lawsuit Reform by Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington). Additionally, Rep. Williams applauds the passage of House Bill 576 out of the House Committee on Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, legislation he sponsored that would delay money transactions to allow users to cancel, if needed.
“I look forward to the second meeting of the Rules Subcommittee for Senate Bill 68,” said Rep. Williams. “I also certainly believe House Bill 576 will be a great benefit to all Georgians who have lost millions of dollars at this point.”
The House Rules Subcommittee on Lawsuit Reform was recently created by Speaker Burns, and it is tasked with considering proposed legislation that addresses changes to Georgia’s legal environment under Senate Bill 68 and Senate Bill 69.
House Bill 576 would amend the Fair Business Practices Act of 1975 to require that money transmitters that operate a peer-to-peer payment platform delay a transaction for at least 15 minutes to allow a user to cancel the transaction. The bill seeks to allow users to cancel if they suspect transaction fraud or make an error during the process.
Representative Al Williams represents the citizens of District 168, which includes a portion of Liberty County. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2002 and currently serves on the Appropriations, Appropriations Subcommittee on Public Safety, Defense & Veterans Affairs, Economic Development & Tourism, Game, Fish & Parks, Regulated Industries, Rules, Rules Subcommittee on Lawsuit Reform and Rural Development committees.
