Rep. Al Williams Appointed to the House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Insurance Rates

ATLANTA – House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) recently appointed State Representative Al Williams (D-Midway) to serve on the House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Insurance Rates.

“This committee has a real opportunity to shine a light on the practices driving premium increases and ensure that every Georgian, no matter their zip code, has access to affordable coverage,” said Rep. Williams. “I appreciate Speaker Burns’ confidence in appointing me to this important committee. Georgians deserve insurance rates that are fair, transparent and grounded in sound policy. I look forward to working with my colleagues to bring accountability and balance to our state’s insurance system.”

The Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Insurance Rates will conduct a thorough examination of the insurance industry’s rate-setting practices, profit margins, claims processing and regulatory compliance to ensure that Georgia’s businesses, citizens and consumers are not being subjected to unjustified rate hikes. The committee will compile a report of specific findings related to our state’s insurance premiums or legislative recommendations that protect consumers from predatory pricing to ensure that Georgia’s insurance market operates fairly and transparently.

Speaker Burns also appointed the following study committee members: State Representatives Matt Reeves (R-Duluth), Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee), Shaw Blackmon (R-Bonaire), Majority Whip James Burchett (R-Waycross), Noel Williams, Jr. (R-Cordele), Todd Jones (R-South Forsyth), Emory Dunahoo (R-Gillsville), Michelle Au (D-Johns Creek), Bruce Williamson (R-Monroe), Trey Kelley (R-Cedartown), Minority Leader Carolyn Hugley (D-Columbus), Jaclyn Ford (R-Tifton), Karen Mathiak (R-Griffin), Majority Leader Chuck Efstration (R-Mulberry), Governor’s Floor Leader Soo Hong (R-Lawrenceville) and Joseph Gullett (R-Dallas).
