ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives yesterday gave final passage to House Resolution 1608 and House Resolution 1655, road naming resolutions, sponsored by State Representative Al Williams (D-Midway).
“It was my pleasure to honor a great man and a beloved establishment with a road naming dedication,” said Rep. Williams. “Carl Dykes was truly a hero and a giant for our community, and I know that he will not soon be forgotten. McLarry’s brought people together, and although its doors have closed, the bonds formed there will last forever.”
HR 1608 would honor the memory of Carl Dykes by dedicating Georgia State Highway 119 as “Carl Dykes Highway” in his memory. Dykes was a WWII veteran, former State Senator, and former Mayor of the City of Hinesville. The road dedication will take place during a ceremony on April 9th at 10:30 a.m., and refreshments will be served at the Ameris Bank meeting room immediately following the dedication.
HR 1655 would honor the former establishment known as McLarry’s by dedicating .25 miles of U.S. Highway 84 as “McLarry’s Curve” in its honor. Located near Fort Stewart, McLarry’s was a local establishment that housed a restaurant as well as a gas station that served the residents of Liberty County for 25 years. The road dedication will take place during a ceremony on April 16th at 10:30 a.m.
