“I am proud of this brave, young citizen of Liberty County and was blessed to have her and her family join my colleagues and I in the House Chamber recently. Mariyah’s story is truly inspiring,” said Rep. Williams.  “She immediately went into service when she noticed her friend suffering and literally saved his life in the school cafeteria in a true act of heroism.”

Mariyah Carter successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver on a fellow classmate, Ryan Lippy, who Mariyah saw choke on a piece of bread. Mariyah learned the Heimlich maneuver as part of the fourth grade curriculum, taught by the school’s nurse. The Heimlich maneuver was taught to Mariyah and her peers using dolls from Heimlich Heroes, a company that sends free dolls to schools to train students on the Heimlich maneuver.
