ATLANTA – State Representative Alex Atwood (R-St. Simons Island) was recently selected for the Republican Leadership for Georgia (RLG) 2015 class. The RLG program is designed to produce trained Republican leaders who are willing to serve and assist others, are committed to the tradition of full participation in the political process, and believe in Republican principles.
“I am indeed humbled and honored to have been selected for the Republican Leadership for Georgia program,” said Rep. Atwood.
Rep. Atwood was nominated to the RLG class of 2015 by State Representative Katie Dempsey (R-Rome), Subcommittee Chair to the House Appropriations Committee, and Ruby Robinson, State President of the Georgia Federation of Republican Women.
“Words cannot express the respect I hold for both Representative Dempsey and President Robinson,” continued Atwood. “They are both outstanding leaders whose support, advice and kindness I will long seek and remember.”
In 18 years, the program has produced 403 graduates, including Congressman Tom Graves, former Georgia House Majority Whip Edward Lindsey, Georgia House Republican Caucus Chair Emeritus Sharon Cooper, and Public Service Commissioner Chuck Eaton.
Based on the vision of the late Senator Paul Coverdell, the RLG program continues the role historically undertaken by the former Coverdell Leadership Institute (CLI). The RLG Program consists primarily of 10 monthly weekend sessions held throughout Georgia and Washington, D.C. from September through June. The sessions cover a range of topics, including constitutional, ethical, and legislative issues and processes.
Representative Alex Atwood represents the citizens of District 179, which includes portions of Glynn County. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2010, and currently serves as the Vice Chair of Juvenile Justice Committee, and as the Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations, Insurance, and Judiciary Non-Civil committees and as House Majority Caucus Deputy Whip.
