ATLANTA— State Representative Amy Carter (R-Valdosta) recently participated in the “Big Bodacious Bee,” an adult spelling bee benefiting Brooks County Family Connection and General Educational Development (GED) programs. Rep. Carter’s spelling bee team consisted of students from each of the Brooks County District public schools.
“Witnessing my team of students and their enthusiasm for spelling, learning, and education was such an important moment for me as an educator,” said Rep. Carter. “This unique event increases GED awareness and raises money to promote literacy, all while creating fun and friendly competition between the participants.”
Rep. Carter’s team, “We Bee Reppin,” included the following team members: Saniya Blankumsee, Quitman Elementary, 5th grade; Riley Pritchard, Brooks County High School, 9th grade; Kyle Lawson, Brooks County Middle School, 8th grade; Morgan Yeomans, North Brooks Elementary School, 4th grade; and Mackenzie Alexander, North Brooks Elementary School, 4th grade.
The “Big Bodacious Bee” was held on September 18 and hosted by the Brooks County Certified Literate Community Program and Brooks County Family Connection. This annual community/corporate spelling bee is designed to raise funds for Family Connection programs and GED testing scholarships. Teams who participated in the spelling bee competed for the title of the “Top Speller” and the “Big Bedazzled B Trophy.”
Representative Amy Carter represents the citizens of District 175, which includes portions of Brooks, Lowndes, and Thomas counties. She was elected into the House of Representatives in 2006 and is currently the Chairman of the Governmental Affairs Committee, the Secretary of the Appropriations Committee, and the Ex-Officio of the Ways & Means Committee.
