ATLANTA – State Representative Angela Moore (D-Decatur) today issued the following statement regarding the recent detection of the H5N1 strain of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary in Henry County:
“It breaks my heart that the avian flu has been detected at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary. I’m grateful that Noah’s Ark and our state authorities are working quickly to mitigate and prevent the spread of the virus from affecting the surrounding areas. Noah’s Ark is such a wonderful refuge for all kinds of wildlife, and I trust that the owners and the state will be able to provide a high level of care to animals while the sanctuary remains closed.”
State authorities have implemented a six-mile radius around the sanctuary to limit the potential spread of the virus. The Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is continuing to develop a course of action to limit the spread of the virus. According to the sanctuary’s Facebook page, the park will remain closed through Saturday, August 27. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, bird flu viruses do not normally infect humans.
State Representative Angela Moore represents the citizens of House District 90, which includes portions of DeKalb, Rockdale and Henry counties. She was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2021 and currently serves on the Creative Arts & Entertainment, Code Revision and Higher Education committees.
