ATLANTA – State Representative Debra Bazemore (D-South Fulton), who also serves as a member of the Georgia House Democratic Caucus (GHDC) COVID-19 Subcommittee, makes constituents aware of statistics regarding the number of children who have contracted COVID-19 in Georgia and in the United States. During the subcommittee’s study of data presented by the CDC, the subcommittee found that there has been a daily increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases among children.
“The GHDC COVID-19 Subcommittee found that on Tuesday, June 16, there was an increase of 3,170 cases of children who contracted COVID-19 across the U.S.,” said Rep. Bazemore. “Furthermore, as of Wednesday, June 17, 2020, there has been an increase of 87 cases in children in only one day in Georgia. It does not appear that we have realized the magnitude of these cases. However, we now know that once schools, daycares and sports resume, the numbers are sure to increase.”
The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) reported, as of June 18, that there have been 2,780 children diagnosed with COVID-19 in Georgia. The DPH also reported that of such cases, there have been 74 hospitalizations and one death; there have been 8 hospitalizations for children under one year of age, 15 hospitalizations for children from one to four years old, four hospitalizations for children from five to nine years old and 47 hospitalizations and one death for children from 10 to 17 years old. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been 90,976 children from zero to 17 years old who have contracted COVID-19 in the U.S. as of June 18, 2020.
“With the consideration of completely opening schools, daycares and allowing children to participate in contact sports, the Georgia House Democratic Caucus continues to extract daily statistics from the CDC and Department of Public Health to keep Georgians informed,” said members of the subcommittee. “It is imperative that school superintendents, teachers, daycare directors, parents and legislators consider these statistics when making decisions for our children.”
The GHDC COVID-19 Subcommittee was recently formed to monitor issues involving COVID-19 cases in the state. Through virtual legislative updates on the GHDC’s Facebook page, members of the caucus and the subcommittee provide updates regarding COVID-19 information, including coronavirus in children, on weekdays at 5 p.m.
