ATLANTA – State Representative Sharon Beasley-Teague (D-Red Oak) today issued the following statement regarding her commenting on legislation during the City of South Fulton House Delegation’s recent virtual town hall meeting on Tuesday, August 4, 2020:
“I want to thank my colleagues for the recent invitation to speak on legislation from the 2020 legislative session, including House Bill 916, legislation I introduced to repeal the death penalty in Georgia. After hearing from many constituents who expressed their concerns about the meeting’s agenda, I decided that I must listen to what my constituents have to say.
“As a result, I decided to withdraw my time from speaking on HB 916 during Tuesday’s virtual meeting to allow for more time to discuss House bills 921 and 1019, legislation that was passed to provide several changes to the city’s charter.
“To ensure that any city’s legislative delegation is receiving the most accurate information from citizens and the city council, the mayor and all city council members typically send each legislator in the delegation letters for legislative changes or requests to improve the lives of the citizens of the city in question. The City of South Fulton’s government is new, and it is understandable that we are still refining this process.
“Unfortunately, I have not heard directly from members of the city council about their concerns for how House bills 921 and 1019 were brought to the table this past legislative session, but I welcome our city council members to contact members of the delegation so we can forge a path forward and ensure that all voices are heard regarding legislation that impacts the city.
“It is my greatest honor to serve the citizens in House District 65, and I look forward to continuing to make the City of South Fulton a wonderful place for families and businesses to thrive. As always, be blessed.”
