ATLANTA – State Representative Sharon Beasley-Teague (D-Red Oak) today announced her support of the 20th annual Bill of Rights Essay Scholarship Contest for college-bound female high school juniors and seniors, which is co-sponsored by the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) and the National Rifle Association (NRA).
“NFWL/NRA’s annual essay contest is a tremendous opportunity for high school women graduating in 2017 and 2018,” said Rep. Beasley-Teague. “I’ve been a proud supporter of this contest for many years, as it is a great way to engage young women in government and politics at all levels and assist with college expenses. I strongly encourage Georgia’s female high school juniors and seniors to apply for a chance to win a $3,000 scholarship and trip to NFWL’s Annual Conference.”
This contest is open to high school junior and senior women across the country that plan on attending a domestic college or university. To apply, eligible students must write a 400-600 word essay on one of three topics addressing relevant constitutional issues regarding women. In addition to the essay, applicants must also submit an online application and two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from an elected woman in their state.
All application materials must be submitted online by 5 p.m. Eastern time on July 10, 2017. Following this deadline, an NFWL selection committee will review each applicant and determine six winners. The selection committee will primarily focus on applicants’ understanding of the U.S. Constitution with original insight.
Winners will each receive a $3,000 college scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to NFWL’s 2017 Annual Conference in Minneapolis where they will have the opportunity to engage with hundreds of women lawmakers.
Through annual educational and networking events, the National Foundation for Women Legislators supports elected women from all levels of governance. As a non-profit, non-partisan organization, NFWL does not take ideological positions on public policy issues, but rather serves as a forum for women legislators to be empowered through information and experience.
