Rep. Benton Appointed to House Study Committee on School Security

ATLANTA – State Representative Tommy Benton (R-Jefferson) was recently appointed by Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) to serve on the House Study Committee on School Security.

“In the wake of one of the deadliest mass shootings in our country’s recent history, it is more critical now than ever before that we examine ways to best protect Georgia’s schools,” said Rep. Benton. “By establishing this study committee and allocating funding specifically for school security in the state budget, the Georgia General Assembly has made it clear that the safety of our state’s students, faculty and staff is of the utmost importance. I’m honored to be appointed by Speaker Ralston to serve on this essential study committee, and I look forward to working alongside my fellow committee members as we study practical, effective ways to make our schools more secure.”

This nine-member study committee was established by House Resolution 1414 and will examine ways to curb incidences of violence, facilitate life-saving responses and provide safer learning environments for Georgia’s students, teachers and other school personnel. The study committee will explore the conditions, needs and issues associated with school security and will recommend any action or legislation it deems necessary based on its findings.
